Not every good sales person can be a good sales manager. At my previous job we had a new guy brought in from another company as he was a top sales person. Everybody expected so much of him, but he wasn’t a very good manager. He was good at sales, but couldn’t control or should I say manage the others. He reverted to doing most of the jobs himself, but that didn’t lead to a good result as his team mates didn’t feel either valued or appreciated. I think the biggest mistake was he was not connected to his team. Sitting behind glass, he rarely has been on the shop floor and talked to anyone about anything but targets and goals. He left few months later and I hope he actually learned from his mistakes.

I went to the link for Audiblepodcast.com and nothing pulled up. I even clicked on the link above, nothing. I'd like to see the leadership list, but I'm having troubles. Anybody else go there?

Jeb offers excellent advice.

Twice during my career, I was asked to turnaround failing teams. Both times I took last place teams to first place in less than 12 months and with little turnover. Here is my advice…

1) Spend a short period of time asking a lot of questions and uncovering speed bumps to success. Look for things you can fix.

2) Fix what you can.

3) Establish achievable short tern goals.

4) Develop a “vision” about where you want to lead your team. Leadership starts with a vision.

5) Considering all of the above, develop a “First 100 Days” plan.

6) Hold a team meeting to present your “First 100 Days” Plan and discuss the following…

A) What you learned from all the questions you’ve asked.

B) The problems you’ve corrected.

C) Where the team is now.

D) Your “First 100 Days” goals. These are your short-term goals.

E) Announce your Vision for the team.

F) End with some “War Cry” such as “No man left behind” or “Let the competition eat our dust”.

Monitor your success against your short-term goals and make adjustments when necessary.

I wish you the best of success.
